Sport

Bastion Primary School encourages participation in sport, because we believe that a healthy body houses a healthy mind.  A wide variety of sporting codes are offered, so there is something for everyone!

At Bastion Primary School, we establish a love of cricket. Cricket is played as a summer sport in Term 1 and Term 4.  Although cricket is mostly played by our boys, there are a few girls who join the boys.  Bastion offers mini-cricket for u.7 to u.9 learners and senior cricket with a full team of 11 players from u.10 to u.13, where Bastion fields three teams in each age group.

Bastion has two fields on which cricket can be played and matches are played weekly during the cricket season.

Members of our u.11A cricket team, as well as members of our u.13A and u.13B teams, take part in 6-a-side tournaments every year, in their respective age groups.

During the school holiday at the end of the third term, our u.13As prepare for the season ahead by touring to Knysna for the annual u.13 Cretchley Cricket Festival, where they play cricket against teams that are not their normal opponents at home.  However, this tour is not only about cricket.  By exposing learners to the attractions of the area, their life experiences are broadened.

Tennis

Bastion Primary School offers tennis for boys and girls. Although tennis is one of the smaller sports offered at Bastion, it is still coached and played with passion.  Over the years, Bastion has produced a number of provincial tennis players.

Athletics

Bastion Primary School encourages mass participation during our annual interhouse athletics meeting, where all learners are given the opportunity to showcase their athletics talents.  Our top athletes also take part in the Top 3 meeting, along with two of our neighbouring schools.

During the 2025 athletics season, Bastion had 70 athletes that took part in the Zone 2 meeting, of which 15 qualified for the WP championships.  There, two achieved Western Cape colours and will take part in the South African championships.

Bastion also hosts an athletics meeting during the fourth term and schools from all over the Western Cape send their best athletes to compete.

Cross Country

Cross country is a winter sport. In the past few years, our cross country team has grown and every learner who wants to run with us, is welcome to join us for practices, regardless of age, even though the league only starts with u.9.  If you consider yourself a long distance athlete who wants to measure yourself against the best of other schools, or if you just want to get fit, cross country is for you.  Our cross country team runs in a variety of locations, which means that the terrain will differ.  No two races are the same, and this makes it enjoyable for our learners.

We practise three times per week, with league races taking place on Fridays.  Distances vary between 2 km and 4 km, depending on the age group.

Bastion's cross country team holds Bastion's name high, with 4 athletes who made the WP team in 2024.  Two of these athletes then went on to make the Western Cape team.  In 2025, 7 of Bastion's athletes made the WP team.

Netball

At Bastion Primary School, we believe that netball is for every girl. We offer teams from u.7 to u.13, with A to E teams, so that each learner may have the opportunity to develop her skills to the best of her ability, and to take part in matches.  Our team of dedicated coaches and supporters create an environment of teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship form the backbone.

Each year our u.12 and u.13 teams undertake exciting tours.  The u.13A team represents Bastion with pride every year at the prestigious Wildeklawer tournament in Kimberley, while other teams take part in various tournaments across the province.

Bastion's netball excels in the league.  Our u.10A to u.13A teams reach the playoffs every year, a mere one step away from participation in the South African Schools Netball Championships.

We are also proud that a number of our players are chosen annually for the Western Cape Schools Teams, where they hold Bastion's name high.

At Bastion, netball is more than just a sport.  It is a place where dreams begin and champions are formed.

Bastion Primary School is a school with approximately 330 boys living out their passion for rugby on the field.  Bastion's teams take part in various tournaments, and do well in each of these tournaments.  In 2025, our u.13A team was undefeated at the prestigious Wildeklawer tournament in Kimberley.

The senior teams regularly undertake tours where they get to measure themselves against schools from across the country.

Grades 1-3 play mini-rugby, on a smaller field, while our boys in Grades 4-7 play the full-field 15-man game.  The seniors also take part in 7s rugby.

Bastion is represented regularly by boys who make WP teams.  In 2025, Bastion had four u.13 boys and one u.12 boy who obtained provincial colours.

Hockey

Bastion Primary School offers field hockey for both boys and girls from u.7 to u.13, in the WP Premier Hockey League.  Our juniors play mini-hockey, appropriate for their age groups, while our u.13s play full-field hockey with a full team of 11 players. We are privileged to have our own full-sized astro turf, which offers the best possible environment for practice and competition.  All our players, from u.7 to u.13, practise and play matches on our astro. Our structured programme develops talent at every level, with a number of players making zonal or provincial teams.

Every year, our u.13s look forward to an educational tour, which is designed to be more than just a hockey experience, but also has an educational purpose by offering the learners interesting and fun learning experiences.

Archery

Archery at Bastion Primary School is an ever-growing sport, capturing the interest of our learners and community alike. Since 2019, our archery team has consistently ranked among the top three primary school teams in South Africa—a proud achievement that reflects the dedication of our young athletes. Bastion is proud to be represented annually by a number of learners and members of staff who are taken up in provincial teams.

Despite the pause during the Covid years, the passion for archery at Bastion has only grown stronger, with more learners taking up the bow each season.

Beyond competition, archery offers incredible benefits to our learners. It sharpens focus, discipline and patience, skills that carry over into the classroom. For children with special educational needs, archery provides an inclusive environment where they can thrive, build confidence and improve coordination. The sport teaches resilience, responsibility, and teamwork—while still being fun! At Bastion, archery is more than a sport; it’s a tool that empowers our learners to aim high, both on the range and in life.

BassieBots

BassieBots is the after-hours robotics and coding club of Bastion Primary School, which is active throughout the year.  Here, learners work with the Lego Spike platform to build and code a robot, using iPads to write the code.  Proficient learners take part in competitions, such as the WRO (World Robot Olympiad).  In 2025, Bastion had two teams that qualified for the national competition of the WRO, where both teams earned silver awards.

Learners do not only acquire the future-orientated technical skills needed to build and program a robot, but also adaptability and the ability to work together as a team.

Chess

Chess is fun, and along with playing, analytical and mathematical thought patterns are learnt and honed.  While other sporting codes train the body, chess trains the brain - equally important for our children!  In the past few years, Bastion has bought three garden chess sets for the learners so that any learner may play chess during breaks.

Chess at Bastion is healthy, strong and growing.  We welcome all learners who are interested to play chess and to be competitive.  We have a professional chess coach, Mr Calvin Klaasen, who is involved with the TOMCA chess academy and who, himself, plays chess on a national level.

In 2024, our u.13A team took part in the Top Schools competition in Oudtshoorn and finished as the second-best chess team in the Western Cape.  They also finished as champions of the u.13 division of the Cape Town Chess League 2024.

Our teams take part in a variety of tournaments, including online tournaments.  We also have clocks so that learners can practise playing under conditions which simulate tournaments.

TOMCA regularly offers private chess sessions at Bastion, which our learners thoroughly enjoy.
