Academics

General

Bastion Primary School is a government school which follows the CAPS curriculum for primary schools, with art and music as options for creative arts in Grade 7.  All learners take isiXhosa and receive training in computers from Grades 1 to 7.

Our competent educators use technology to make learning material more exciting and accessible for our learners.  In addition to that which happens in the classroom, our staff make the material come alive by, where possible, having the learners experience the material in a practical manner.  To this end, our learners build models of scientific and technological principles, experience maths and science by practical experiences on the schoolgrounds, while a love of languages and reading is encouraged by our annual book week.  Grade 7s apply their EMS knowledge during their annual entrepreneurs' days.

Our Grade 6 and 7 learners are given the opportunity to get to know nature and each other better during their annual grade camps, where the focus is on teamwork and creativity, while learners are also challenged to operate outside of their comfort zones.

Our foundation phase experiences the thrill of theatre every year as they visit the Artscape theatre to watch the Kipper production.  This year our Grade 4s visited the South African museum in Cape Town to make their SS come alive.

Olympiads

Bastion offers extra opportunities for our learners to enrich themselves.  One of the ways in which this is done, is by entering learners for olympiads.  Our top learners are entered for the AMESA olympiad in mathematics.  Learners are also entered in the Kangaroo, Media24 and Horizon mathematics competitions, as well as the Conquesta olympiads in mathematics and home language.

We also offer our younger learners the opportunity to enrich themselves in this manner, and therefore also provide the foundation phase the opportunity to enter the Conquesta olympiad in mathematics.
