Background
The need for a second primary school in Brackenfell was evident in the 1970s. In 1980, Bastion Primary School opened its doors with 293 learners under the leadership of Mr Jannie Barnard as principal. He was followed by Mr Chris Eksteen in 2006. After Mr Eksteen's retirement in 2021, the current principal, Mr Henri van den Berg, was appointed to fill this important position.
Over the years, Bastion's facilities have grown, with various improvements and upgrades provided for our learners and staff. Staff embrace teaching with technology and each classroom is equipped with a data projector and each member of staff has a laptop. The school has added a number of extra classroom wings and clubhouses, as well as upgraded the pavilion, driveway and added an Astro for hockey. Our Grade 1 and 2 learners are also privileged to have playground equipment to play on during breaks.

After the school's founding in 1980, it quickly grew and became established in Brackenfell and today it is a beacon against the hill of Protea Heights. Currently, Bastion boasts with roughly 1 900 learners and a staff of over 100 members, which included educators, administrative staff, a social worker and general workers. Bastion Primary School does not stand back in any field for any school in the country, not in academics, sport or culture. Bastion is also a trailblazing school, offering learners Robotics after hours, as well as computer classes for all learners from Grade 1, so that we can equip our learners for the modern world. Bastion also offers Xhosa as extra enrichment for all learners from Grade 1 to Grade 7.

At Bastion Primary School we are proud to promote a nurturing environment where respect, caring, integrity and responsibility form the core. With a strong focus on academic excellence, a wide variety of extramurals, personal growth and a feeling of community, we offer your child an exceptional foundation for a bright future.
